During these uncertain times, it is really lovely to hear of the amazing work our teams are doing to support those in the Tees Valley.

Avril, one of our Employer Engagement Officers, delivered some pre-placement training to a partipcant from Hartlepool nearly two years ago. Within this training Avril used an exercise named ‘Head in the clouds, feet on the ground’. This exercise allows participants to have belief in themselves by setting realistic goals, by building their confidence and by giving them a focus whilst they are moving forward into work. Participants are then asked to write or draw six things they would like to aim towards, and these are referred back to over the course of the programme.

This participant said that “although only a dream”, she would like to:

Feel valued

Get a job

Come off Benefits

Have a family Holiday

Buy a house

Own her own car

This participant went on to gain full time employment from this placement and has been in this employment ever since! Avril bumped into this participant and was so pleased to find out she had managed to tick every single thing off her list, and has kept the list so she can always remember her journey. The participant told Avril that she was ‘so happy’ and that getting her own car was ‘the last thing on her list’ and now she had completed it all. She told Avril her family enjoyed a lovely holiday together last year and that her husband now works with her too! Her parting words to Avril were “I never thought I would be where I am today- thank you.”
