I’m a different person to what I was. I like to look forward to something, I want something in my life. I don’t want to sit down.

Terrace's story

"I used to work in engineering, working on production lines for car and engine parts, checking for quality.

I had a leg injury and needed an operation. I wasn’t able to work for a while after the operation and couldn’t walk properly. As soon as I was better I wanted to work again, but I wasn’t able to do things with the same level of physical activity and I didn’t want to work nights any more.

A lot of things happened at once. I had the operation and was out of work. My long-term relationship ended and I had to move away, which took me away from my son. I was really down and depressed. But I’m a proud person and I keep things in.

I was actively looking for a new job and I heard about people who could help you with CVs. That was Step Forward Tees Valley. Rachel at Step Forward really helped me. She saw how emotional I was in myself, I hadn’t realised how bad it all was.

She introduced me to all the courses and I did everything they offered! It wasn’t just a case of getting better, it was getting to know people, getting to talk to people. I was trying to be really independent and do things myself but this helped me be occupied and be with people.

I did health and safety, first aid, the full programme of courses. It built my confidence. It’s given me friends and good relationships with people and now I have got myself a job. I’ve been working a year. I’m working at Aldi’s warehouse where I’m a picker and checker. I’m responsible for making sure they get the right products and in right amounts. I like my work – I’m up and about early!

I feel like I’ve got lots to look forward to. I’m going on holiday, it’s nice. I’m a different person to what I was. I like to look forward to something, I want something in my life. I don’t want to sit down.

Rachel is an absolutely wonderful lass. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her. It was a godsend. I only went in to update my CV but updated my life instead!
