"I am making friends"

Denise's story

"I have been working with Step Forward Tees Valley since August 2017. When I first went I struggled to get through an appointment without getting emotional and upset. I was struggling with my mental health. I hadn’t worked for a lot of years, I was bringing my family up. When I was younger I was worked as a nanny and did YTS schemes and worked in retail.

When I was at the Job Centre, I was told I was on the dyslexic spectrum and they thought I needed extra support and that’s how I got involved with Step Forward Tees Valley.

I was struggling to manage. I wanted to do courses but I found it overwhelming. I started volunteering with Mind and taking part in Community Heroes days. Things like that I can manage and I do find them helpful.

From where I was to where I am now, I am a different person. I’m still not 100% but Step Forward has really helped me. Getting out and about, socialising and getting involved, it’s helped me tremendously."
