John's story

"When I first came to Step Forward I felt nervous and unsure about the programme, as the previous work programme I had been on had not been helpful and they said that they could not do anything for me. After speaking to my navigator from SFTV I felt comfortable and at ease.

I engaged in the programme and went on to complete my Level 2 in Maths and English, which I didn’t think that I could do. I also volunteered with the Community Heroes and went on the group walks which helped improve my social skills.

I attended the Amacus course where I improved my confidence and IT skills. During the course I also made a friend who I now see outside of Step Forward.

After I completed the Amacus course, I attended the Level 1 Health and Social Care course which my navigator from SFTV referred me onto. I enjoyed this course as it was something I hadn’t done before and my friend from the Amacus course was on it with me.

When I passed the course I was offered an interview with Hartfield’s Manor in Hartlepool as a kitchen porter. I was successful with my interview and have been hired as a kitchen porter. This is the first time that I have had paid work as previously I had only been a volunteer in the past."
