"I am building a better future"

Michelle's story

"I had a real lack of confidence and suffered with mental health issues, depression and anxiety. I also have some mobility problems and being a mum to three children meant I didn’t get out much.

I was pregnant with my first child when I left school so I went straight into being a mum. I now have a 12-year-old, five-year-old and four-year-old -  having kids is great but I do get anxious about things and sometimes I felt like I was on my own.

When I joined Step Forward Tees Valley I was introduced to so many people and groups. They got me help with my mental health issues and when I felt confident enough I started training courses to get some basic qualifications.

I have passed my entry level 3 English and entry level 1 maths and I am now moving onto the next levels. I am hoping to start nursing at college next September.

I have not only learned new things on the courses but I have got to meet new people so I don’t feel so alone. It’s opened up lots of new opportunities and ideas to me. It’s made me realise what I can do and that there is a lot of help and support out there. The great thing about Step Forward Tees Valley is that they get you the help you need – whatever that is, as you might not realise what support you can get.

Step Forward Tees Valley has made a big difference to my life. I now feel I have a future and I am doing something great for me and my kids.”
