“I am ready for work."

Thomas's story

"I started with Step Forward Tees Valley about 18 months ago in Middlesbrough as I needed extra support to deal with my barriers.

I had struggled with mental health and my job search.

When I met Carol, my navigator, we made an action plan and looked at the barriers I was facing.

Because I have a learning disability, they helped me to look for jobs and make any applications. I also did a wellbeing course which helped me with managing stress.

Once I felt more confident I started looking for volunteering placements and work trials and I was lucky enough to find a placement at the Fork in the Road where I served customers and helped behind the bar and kitchen.

I have since completed an IT training course, where I learned a lot of digital skills and now I’ve also had the confidence to find a long-term volunteering placement with the Cat Protection Society."
